Apple is no longer the world's largest smartphone manufacturer, is that true?

Apple's position as the world's largest smartphone manufacturer has officially shifted according to data from research firm IDC. There are a number of things that cause it.

On Sunday (14/4), IDC noted that Apple cellphone shipments fell 10% in the first quarter of 2024 due to increasing competition from Android smartphone makers.

In the first quarter of 2024, Apple shipped around 50.1 million iPhones, this is down from 55.4 million units in the same period last year according to IDC research. The decline occurred specifically due to the 2.1% shrinkage of Apple's market in China in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year.

The decline occurred because several Chinese companies and government agencies restricted the use of Apple devices by their employees for security reasons.

In general, data shows that global smartphone shipments actually increased 7.8% to 289.4 million units during January-March 2024. However, the global smartphone market is dominated by Samsung, which controls a market share of 20.8%.

The South Korean company took the position of top cellphone manufacturer from Apple. The sharp decline in iPhone manufacturing occurred after its performance in the December quarter was overtaken by Samsung.

Apple now sits in second position, with a market share of 17.3%, in line with strengthening market share gains by Chinese brands such as Huawei.

Meanwhile, another brand, namely Xiaomi, occupies the third position in the world's largest smartphone manufacturer with a market share of 14.1% during the first quarter of 2024.

In early 2024, Samsung itself recorded shipping more than 60 million cellphones during that period. After releasing the new series, namely the Galaxy S24, sales jumped 8%, according to data from Counterpoint.
