How to check whether other people are using our WiFi and how to deal with it

It's annoying when your internet connection suddenly slows down. Work that should be completed more quickly suddenly becomes slower than usual.

Suspect someone else is using your WiFi? Instead of being suspicious and emotional, try checking to see if anyone else is using your WiFi. Here are things you can do and how to overcome them.

How to check whether other people are using WiFi or not

1. Check the wireless router lights

There are indicator lights on the wireless router which aim to show internet connectivity, cable network connections, and other wireless activities. One way to find out if someone is using your WiFi is to turn off all wireless devices and see if the indicator light is still flashing.

However, several other devices such as TVs or game consoles are also sometimes connected to WiFi. Therefore, this method may be less effective.

2. Check the router device list

Start by entering the router's IP address into a web browser window. Some routers have a default IP address that you can use to access the admin panel.

Otherwise, you can find this address in Windows by opening a command prompt (press Win + R then type cmd) then type ipconfig in the window followed by Enter. The number next to 'Default Gateway' or 'IPv4 address' is what you are looking for. Next, type that IP address into the browser window. You will be asked to log in to the router.

Of course all routers are different, but once you're logged in, look for the sections related to connected devices (Device Manager, Connected Devices, My Network, etc.). This should provide a list of IP addresses, MAC addresses, and device names (if detected) that you can find. You just have to compare the connected device with your own device, to find out whether there are strangers joining you.

3. How to deal with other people using our WiFi

The only way is to ensure wireless security using WPA2 encryption and setting up a new password. Make sure your new password is stronger than before. Use numbers and symbols if necessary to make the password harder to guess.
