Apple is still working hard on artificial intelligence (AI) models to make the iPhone smarter. Reportedly, Apple intends to collaborate with Google to power the AI features on the iPhone.

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is exploring collaboration with Google to license the Gemini AI model. The two companies are said to be actively negotiating about using Gemini to power a number of AI features that will be present in iOS 18.

This report indicates that Apple and Google have not agreed regarding the terms of cooperation, branding, or how this collaboration will be implemented. On the other hand, Apple is also discussing the same thing with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

Apple itself already has a long history of collaboration with Google. Currently Apple and Google have a billion dollar collaboration to make Google the default search engine in the Safari browser for iPhone.

Apple has long been rumored to be testing its own AI model known as Ajax. A Bloomberg report indicates Apple's AI models will power several on-device features in iOS 18.

However, Apple is still looking for third-party partners to provide on-cloud AI solutions, including generative AI functions such as creating images with just text and helping users write essays, as quoted by TechCrunch, Monday (18/3/2024).

Apart from the Ajax AI model, Apple also has a simple AI chatbot called AppleGPT which is already used by several employees. But this chatbot is still behind its competitors, so it makes sense for Apple to seek help from other companies.

The Gemini AI model has also been used in several cellphones to power AI features. Not long ago, Google partnered with Samsung to release an AI feature driven by the Gemini model on the Galaxy S24 series. Not long after, Google also launched AI features on a number of Pixel phones.

Currently not much information is known about the AI initiative for iOS 18 and iPhone. Apple is likely to announce this collaboration as well as introduce iOS 18 at the WWDC 2024 event which is usually held in June.
