What is meant by Software? Concept, Types, and Examples

What is the definition of software? -

Software refers to the collection of instructions or data that enables a computer to perform specific tasks. Unlike hardware, which represents the physical aspects of a computer, software is intangible and is what runs on the hardware to perform various functions.

Software Types

Software can be broadly categorized into two main types: system software and application software.

System software is designed to manage the hardware components of a computer and provide a platform for running application software. It includes operating systems (like Windows, macOS, and Linux), device drivers, diagnostic tools, servers, windowing systems, and utilities. For instance, the Windows operating system is a type of system software that manages hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs.

Application software, on the other hand, consists of programs that perform specific tasks for users. These can be as simple as a calculator app that performs arithmetic operations, or as complex as a suite of office software used for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations (such as Microsoft Office or Google Workspace). Application software is developed to assist users in completing tasks in various domains, including education, business, graphic design, media playback, and more.

Within these two primary categories, there are various sub-types of software, including but not limited to:

Freeware: Software that is available for use at no cost. For example, the Adobe Acrobat Reader for reading PDF files.

Shareware: Software that is distributed for free on a trial basis with the intention that users may buy the full version after a trial period. An example is WinZip, a file compression tool.

Open Source Software: Software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Examples include the Linux operating system and the Apache HTTP Server.

Commercial Software: Software developed and sold for profit. An example is Microsoft Office.

Each type of software serves a different purpose and is developed using different programming languages and technologies to meet the specific needs of users.

I’ve been using Shapr on my iPad to plan* and visualize projects, because I like being able to casually do those things without having to bust out a full-on laptop. I recently heard about MakeByMe as a web-based solution, but haven’t had enough quality time with it to vouch for it yet. But homegirl Shara promotes it, and she seems like enough of an earnest sweetheart to offset my usual YouTuber-skepticism.

disclaimer on Shapr - AFAIK, it is useless for generating raw materials lists or cut lists. I just use it to virtually build what I have in mind and think through how everything will fit together. I have not sprung for the subscription, though, as I am not deep enough into this hobby (or settled into this app) to justify that expense just yet.
